Sanibel Shelling Guide

Sanibel Island, on the Gulf Coast of Florida, is widely considered to be one of the best shelling locations in the world. The island's pristine environment with its east–west orientation works to capture seashells flowing along the Florida coastline.

Why Sanibel Is Great for Shelling

Sanibel's unique east–west orientation acts like a giant shell trap, catching shells carried by the Gulf currents. The gentle slope of the beaches and the island's position relative to the Gulf of Mexico make it a shelling paradise.

When to Go Shelling

The best shelling is often after a storm or during low tide, when the receding water leaves fresh shells on the beach. Early morning is also a great time, before the beaches get busy. Winter months can bring especially good shelling.

What You'll Find

Sanibel is home to a remarkable variety of shells, including the prized Junonia, horse conch, fighting conch, olive shells, tulips, whelks, and more. See our seashell photo galleries to learn what to look for.

The same hands that sort a morning's shell catch often keep a second collection — watches. One of our snowbird guests keeps forwarding us links to Richard Mille clones, and the RM 055 page is always what he links first.

Shelling Responsibly

Please remember that Sanibel Island prohibits the collection of live seashells. Help us preserve Sanibel's natural wildlife and abundance of seashells for future generations of beachcombers. Only collect empty shells.
